Looking After your Mental Health

- butterfly half b&w, half in colour

Being a student can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. Whether you’re balancing day to day life, exams, friendships, work, or thinking about your future career, it’s completely normal to experience stress, anxiety, or low mood.

Looking after your mental health is just as important as looking after your physical health. Small daily habits, support from others, and knowing where to get help can make a huge difference.

At Central Training Academy, we want every learner to know that support is available and that you are never alone.

Why mental health matters when you’re in training

Whether you’re based in Southend, Clacton, Grays, Aylesbury or anywhere across Essex and the South East, balancing hands-on learning, work placements and everyday life takes energy. Good mental health helps you:

  • Concentrate during practical sessions and theory work
  • Feel confident trying new skills
  • Build positive relationships with tutors and classmates
  • Handle challenges on placement and keep moving towards your goals

Signs You Might Need Extra Support

Everyone experiences mental health differently, but some common signs include:

  • Feeling anxious or overwhelmed most days
  • Struggling to sleep
  • Losing motivation or confidence
  • Feeling isolated or withdrawn
  • Finding it difficult to concentrate
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Feeling constantly stressed or emotionally exhausted

If any of these feelings continue for a long time, it’s important to speak to someone you trust or access support services.

7 practical ways to look after your mental health

1. Talk about how you’re feeling

You don’t have to deal with things alone. Chat to friends, family, your tutor or one of our support staff. At Central Training Academy our team is trained to listen and help. You don’t have to go through this alone.

2. Move your body

Physical activity is one of the best natural mood boosters.  Outside of college, go for a walk in the park or around your neighbourhood, or join a local sports group.

3. Eat well and stay hydrated

Your brain needs fuel. Regular meals and plenty of water make a real difference to your energy, concentration and mood. Bursaries are available to help with lunch costs on college days – speak to your tutor about how to access this.

4. Protect your sleep

Try to keep similar bed and wake times, even at weekends. Good sleep helps you learn faster and feel more positive.

5. Take regular breaks

Use short breaks between study or placement tasks. You could go for a brisk walk or just step away from what your doing to give your brain time to focus on something different.

6. Be mindful of social media

Scrolling can sometimes make you feel worse. Set time limits and follow accounts that inspire you, like careers, hobbies or positive student stories.

7. Try simple mindfulness

Even 5 minutes of breathing exercises or a short guided session on a mindfulness app (check your phone’s health app) can help you feel calmer.
