11 Winter Blues Survival Tips for Students

Close up Image of person holding a warm mug

As we go into winter, the weeks ahead can look bleak. Usually this is just a temporary feeling, but sometimes it can last a bit longer, like with seasonal affective disorder (check NHS website for more details) However, there is a lot you can do to help yourself. Our Winter Blues Survival Tips for Students is here to help!

You may be concerned about completing your apprenticeship or course. Or maybe, other aspects of your life, like relationships and taking care of yourself are suffering.

At Central, we are hugely aware of the anxiety that simply being way from a regular routine can induce. So, we wanted to remind you that we have an excellent team of mentors among our staff who are ready and able to help you with any problems or issues you may be facing.

How to cope with winter blues

Simply just talking will in itself be a huge relief. Airing your concerns can be the first step to seeing some light at the end of the tunnel.

We’ve put together 11 winter blues survival tips for you below which may help. Some from our learners, some from our tutors and some from mental health advocates we admire and follow. Most of all, don’t struggle in silence. Get in touch with our mentoring team via your tutors and let us help! And in the meantime, why not give some of these ideas a go?

  1. Create a Memory Wall

Make a memory wall in your room or home full of pictures of friends, events and places that make you happy. When you’re feeling a bit down, refer back to it and remember that this time will pass and your current situation is not final.

  2. Get a Sunlight Boost

Take advantage of natural light whenever you can. Step outside, open your curtains, or work near a window – every little bit of sunshine can help fight off the winter blues by boosting your vitamin D and brightening your mood.

  3. Embrace all the Cosy Vibes

Layer up in your favourite hoodies, fuzzy socks, and blankets. When the cold weather gets intense, create a cosy corner for studying with everything you need: a warm blanket, a comfy chair, and a hot drink (think tea, coffee, or cocoa). Having a cosy setup helps keep you comfortable, focused, and in good spirits, even when it’s freezing outside!

  4. Celebrate the small things

Winter can be tough, and you don’t have to conquer everything at once. Break up tasks into small steps and celebrate each one. Whether it’s finishing a chapter, getting through a workout, or simply making your bed in the morning, acknowledge each win. You’re building momentum, and every little step counts!

  5. Fuel your body

It’s tempting to reach for comfort food, but keep a balance of healthy snacks and hearty meals to keep your energy up. Nuts, fruits, soup, and whole grains are great options. And don’t forget to hydrate! Keep a water bottle close, even if it’s cold, your body needs water to function at its best.

  6. Get a good nights’ rest

Consistent sleep can work wonders, especially during the shorter winter days. Set a bedtime and try to stick to it so your body can adjust to a steady rhythm. Quality rest helps your immune system, memory, and mood, three things we all need to get through winter in one piece!

  7. Breathe

Don’t underestimate the value of breathing. Take deep slow breaths when you feel anxious and simply focus on your breath. Try breathing in for 6 seconds through your nose, then breathe out through your mouth for 2 seconds. It’s amazing how quickly this can calm you.

  8. Journaling

Keep a journal. So many people find writing down their thoughts and fears helps them feel that they are not so insurmountable. It can be great for gaining some perspective.

  9. Move your body

Exercise, even in short bursts, can do wonders. A brisk walk around town, a quick yoga session, or a stretch during your lunch break is enough to lift your spirits and release those feel-good endorphins. If it’s too cold outside, try an indoor workout – YouTube is full of quick exercises you can do from your bedroom!

  10. Helpful Apps

Check out apps that are available to download such as Calm and Headspace. Easy to use and highly effective in combatting stress, anxiety and a sense of panic.

  11. Stay Connected

Winter can make us feel like hibernating, but don’t go too long without connecting with friends! Plan a coffee date, study together, or just have a quick call to catch up. Staying social and sharing a laugh is key to keeping your spirits up. Sometimes, just knowing you’re not alone in feeling the winter slump can help!

Talk about your feelings. Whether you choose a friend, family member or one of our mentors, sharing your concerns is a great step towards helping you feel calmer.
