The new rates for the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage are now in full swing. Since the new financial year started on April 1st, there has been an increase across the board. This change is the largest minimum wage increase ever!
National Minimum Wage
If you are under 19 or in the first year of your apprenticeship, you will be paid the national minimum wage for an apprentice. However, if you are 19+ and in the second year of your apprenticeship, you’ll be paid the minimum wage for your age group.
One of the biggest changes is the lowering of the highest age bracket from 23 and over, to 21 and over. This means that if you are in employment and are aged 21 and over you will now be paid £11.44 an hour. For 21-22 year olds, that’s a 12.4% increase, and a 9.8% increase for those aged 23 and over.
National Minimum Wage for Apprentices
National Minimum Wage for apprentices will increased on 1st April 2024 from £5.28 to £6.40 per hour. This is a massive 21.2% increase for apprentices, and much needed.
This £1.12 increase applies to apprentices aged 16-17 years old, and those who are in the first year of their apprenticeship. After the first year of an apprenticeship, apprentices are paid according to their age. Check the infographic and examples below.
Example 1
You were 17 when you started your apprenticeship last year. In your first year, you were paid £5.28 an hour. This year (April 2024), you are now 18 and will be paid £8.60 an hour, in line with your age group.
Example 2
You were 25 when you started your apprenticeship last year. In your first year, you were paid £5.28 an hour. This year (April 2024), you are now 26 and will be paid £11.44 an hour, in line with your age group.
